COPYRIGHT AND INTERNET ETHICS FOR EDUCATIONAL MEDIA


Media and technology are useful tools in the classroom, serving the educational purpose of engaging students’ interest. However, before popping in a video to use with a lesson plan or copying information from the Internet, it is important to realize there are ethical and legal issues regarding the use of educational media materials. As a new teacher it is important to be able to identify ethical and legal responsibilities regarding the use of technology and media in the classroom.


There are several act according to copyright and Internet Ethics For Educational Malaysia
  1. Copyright Act of 1976
    • copyright owners have the right to reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute, perform, display, transfer ownership, rent or lend their creations.
      2.  Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (DMCA)
    • acceptable use of copyright protection technologies
    • copyright infringement for 'commercial or private financial gain'
    • outlines exception for 'non-profit libraries, archives and educational institution
      3.  Copyright Act of 1976 defines 'Fair Use' as :
    • reproduction of copyright word for purposes like critism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research.
The differences between FREEware and SHAREware are the FREEware is free to share and use but SHAREware must be purchased after trial period.

The Commandments of Computer Ethics

Thou shalt not :
  • use computer to harm other people
  • interfere with other people's computer work
  • snoop around in other people's computer files
  • use computer to steal
  • use computer to bear false witness
  • copy or use software which you have to not paid
Thou shalt :
  • think about social consequences of program
  • always use computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for humans


INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD

What is Interactive Whiteboard

An interactive whiteboard (IWB), is a large interactive display that connects to a computer and projector. It is a piece of hardware that looks much like a standard whiteboard but it connects to a computer and a projector in the classroom to make a very powerful tool. When connected, the interactive whiteboard becomes a giant, touch-sensitive version of the computer screen. Instead of using the mouse, you can control your computer through the interactive whiteboard screen just by touching it with a special pen (or, on some types of boards, with your finger). Anything that can be accessed from your computer can be accessed and displayed on the interactive whiteboard, for example Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, photographs, websites or online materials.  The board is typically mounted to a wall or floor stand. They are used in a variety of settings, including classrooms at all levels of education, in corporate board rooms and work groups, in training rooms for professional sports coaching, in broadcasting studios and others.


Advantages of Interactive Whiteboards:
  • Clear graphics
  • Interactivity for teachers and students
  • Projection of computer images on a larger screen for audience viewing
  • Manipulation of computer functions while standing (rather than from the computer)
  • Incorporation of video and images into traditional teaching lessons


Disadvantages of Interactive Whiteboards: 

  • Expensive
  • Require specific software
  • Require extra training for teachers
  • Touch sensitive board has limitations; sometimes is not sensitive enough
  • Speakers are not loud enough sometimes

What is Window Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker (formerly known as Windows Live Movie Maker) is a video editing software that is a part of Microsoft's Windows Essentials software suite. Windows Movie Maker offers the ability to create and edit videos and then publish them to SkyDrive, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr free of charge.

How To Make a Video Using Window Movie Maker

1) Firstly, open the WMM from your computer.

This is how it look like after we open. (This is the old version of WMM)


2) Just click ADD VIDEO AND PHOTO to insert the pictures. Select any pictures that you want.


So, this is the result.


3) Select ANIMATION to your pictures. Choose any animation that is suitable. You also can choose any visual effect according to your creativity.


4) To add title or text, click TITLE or CAPTION at home button.



 5) You also can choose the animation of the text. Just click format tool.


  6) Then, at home button also, click ADD MUSIC. Choose any music that you like from your files.


7) Click project button, select FIT TO MUSIC, so that all your pictures is fit to the duration of your chosen music.


8) Lastly, click save. DONE!

DATA LOGGING

What is Data Logging
Data logging is the process of using a computer to collect data through sensors, analyze the data and save and output the results of the collection and analysis. Data logging also implies the control of how the computer collects and analyzes the data. Data logging is commonly used in scientific experiments and in monitoring systems where there is the need to collect information faster than a human can possibly collect the information and in cases where accuracy is essential. Examples of the types of information a data logging system can collect include temperatures, sound frequencies, vibrations, times, light intensities, electrical currents, pressure and changes in states of matter.

MODELLING AND SIMULATION


Modelling is the process of producing a model; a model is a representation of the construction and working of some system of interest. A simulation of a system is the operation of a model of the system. Teacher can use modelling and simulation as a medium of teaching and learning in classroom. But the most important thing that teacher has to remember is the computer simulations is just a supplement to teaching processes not to replace it. Computer simulations make teaching processes become more interactive, authentic and meaningful. Learners can observe, explore, recreate, and receive immediate feedback about real objects, phenomena, and processes that would otherwise be too complex, time-consuming, or dangerous. The example of the software that teacher can use as a simulation tool is STELLA software.




ASSIGNMENT 2


 WHAT IS SMART SCHOOL
            Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become very powerful tool recently for imparting knowledge and training students to face the challenges posed by the information-based global economy and development. A result, this has increase in the demand for basic computing hardware in schools and higher institution all around the country. Paradigm shift from pencil and paper-based teaching to an ever-increasing reliance on electronic learning has been aware by governments.
            Hence, respective education policies stressing on the need for greater technology access for students. In order to achieve the full potential of ICT for enhancing the learning experience, it is vital to increase the number of students with access to computers. The retrofitted PCs offer an attractive and cost-effective opportunity for installing computers in 10,000 schools across the country. PC refurbishment forms an integral component for the success of programs such as the Smart School initiative in Malaysia.
            The former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad conceptualized the Vision 2020 plan for the country. This vision aimed to map out the steps required for a sustained growth in the long term and achieve all the desired economic and social objectives by 2020. A technologically literate and analytically thinking population forms the cornerstone of this vision. This coupled with the education system’s aim to nurture students into spiritually, intellectually, and emotionally inclined individuals, lead to the formulation of the Smart School Concept. Smart School is a flagship application of the Multimedia Super Corridor.


BACKGROUND OF SMART SCHOOL

            The Malaysian Smart School is defined as learning institutions that have been systematically reinvented in terms of teaching-learning practices and school management in order to prepare children for the information age. The Smart School Flagship was one of the seven applications identified under the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) initiative. The MSC Smart School Flagship Application is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC). The Telekom Smart School (TSS) industry consortium provided the ICT expertise for the initiative.
            The history of the Smart School project is rooted in the two-pronged objectives of the flagship, which are to jumpstart the MSC towards building a knowledge-based economy, contributing to the growth of the ICT industry and creating a pool of talent resulting in high-value job creation. The other one is to prepare the citizens for the information age through an innovative education delivery process.
            The Ministry of Education started to conceptualise the Malaysian Smart School in 1996 and subsequently began its 3-year pilot phase with 88 pilot schools in 1999. Pilot schools are 88 residential and non-residential primary and secondary schools located in rural and urban areas throughout Malaysia that participated in the study to make all 10,000 schools in Malaysia smart by 2010.
            The aim of the Smart School is to change the culture and practices of Malaysia’s schools, moving away from rote-memory learning toward fostering creative thinking skills. Smart schools are provided with computerized classrooms and LCD projectors, electronic resource centre, computers in science labs, self-access centres and WIFI hotspots. The other ICT initiatives are TV Pendidikan and Pelaksanaan Pengajaran Sains dan Matematik dalam Bahasa Inggeris (PPSMI); teaching of science and mathematics in English in 2003.


GOALS AND STRATEGIES


            The implementation of smart school have five goals and strategies that need to be fulfil which is provide all-round development of the individual, provide opportunities to enhance individual strengths and abilities, produce a thinking and technology literate workforce, democratise education and increase participation of stakeholders.
            The first goal is to provide all-round development of the individual like intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual. Intellectual is focus on getting the knowledge. It is also focus on searching, generating, and using knowledge toward creative thinking skills. Then, about the physical is the responsibility and consciousness of student toward life. The development in emotional and spiritual are related to moral and good values. This is included the emotional balance and emotional intelligence.
            The second goal is to provide opportunities to enhance individual strengths and abilities. The strategies of this goal are to provide elective in the curriculum and allow for vertical integration. The vertical integration means that grade levels students for all subject in the school curriculum.
            Third, to produce thinking and technology-literate workforce, students will be teach to have the thinking across the curriculum. The application of technology is applied in teaching and learning to produce a technology-literate student. In the smart school, the use of technology like internet as a teaching- learning material is the best ways to produce children who are have different learning style than another school.
            The forth goals of the Smart School Project is democratise education. The Smart School programmes provide equal access to learning opportunities. In Smart School Curriculum, students enable to have holistic learning because the curriculums involve all significant aspect of life. The uses of technology as one delivery system gives students the skills they need to use technology such as internet to get more information. Other than that, the Smart School programme also provide for differing abilities, style and paces of learning. The teachers have to ensure that the students gain equal access to quality learning and allowing for self-paced learning. To accommodate the variety in students, teachers should make different types of lesson and learning experience to motivate the students in classroom.
            The last goal of the Smart School Project is increase the participation of stakeholders. These goals involve a few strategies that can be due to fulfil the goal, which is to create awareness of what happens in schools. All the stakeholders must know their responsibilities and give feedback so that the Smart School project is known whether it is working or not. The participation of the stakeholders such as parent, community, and private will allow the exchange of experiences and ideas for smart school project. Finally yet importantly, they can launch the parents web site for each smart school so that the school and the parents side can change idea concerning about the smart school project.

Integrating ICT in Teaching and Learning in Malaysian School

1.0  Problem statement
            ICT Application have become an important part of teaching and learning. The Ministry of Education has invested a huge effort in terms of funding and training to equip teachers and students with ICT skills. What are the issues and challenges when ICT is being integrated in teaching and learning in Malaysian schools?


2.0  Introduction
Nowadays, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is become part of our daily lives and act as an important medium for us. ICT is related to all forms of computers communications equipment and software which used to create, design, store, transmit, interpret and manipulated information. On the other words, ICT is the key for much innovation, including significant health innovation and also environmental solution. ICT integration is a basic tool and it is has many function especially in instruction, education and teaching and learning process. Everyone needs a basic understanding of ICT so that they can efficiently participate in this modern technical society.

3.0  Issues And Challenges
However, in Malaysian education, ICT integration in learning and teaching process also encounter some challenges. As we all know, there are wide gaps in the use of ICTs between rural and urban area. When the number of computers is insufficient, only some students can use them. Students have to share computers and they might feel uncomfortable. Their concentration in the class will be effected as they are interested to talk to each other and make noise. Hence, Ministry Of Education should give incentive to students such as free notebook to each student and provide wireless network coverage in their neighbourhood.
More knowledge based on technology is sufficient in human life especially for the teachers. The lacks of knowledge and skills to use ICT among teachers have become a big issue in integrating ICT in our Malaysia school. Hence, it is important to approaches the integration of ICT in trainee teachers. The aim is to develop skills and appropriate knowledge among trainees for using and integrating the correct technology in an appropriate manner. ICT are evolving technology, and so even the most ICT fluent teachers need to continuously upgrade their skills and keep update of the latest technology.
An expensive operating cost to maintain all the equipment and software also become cliché issue faced by school administration. Maintenance of the software (curriculum contents) is relentless. Most of the equipments and software is very sensitive, complicated and expensive. Moreover, the maintenance of the equipments must constantly supervise. Getting more industry players and the community to be involved in schools projects as part of smart partnerships may lower the costing of the equipment and software maintenances. The contract will ensure the maintenance provided by partnership is affordable. Hence, the teachers will not face any problem when using ICTs in their classes as the equipment is maintained well every month.

4.0  Conclusion
Not withstand the issues and challenges in integrating ICT in teaching and learning in our Malaysian school are cliché, it must not be ignored as we need to clear the issues. On that note, a drastic change in the mindset of the school staffs, community and students are needed in order to transform the curriculum and assessment with ICT as the key enabler. Integrating ICT in school is focus on producing creative, innovative and critical students as outlined in the National Education Philosophy.

  3. Then, select Selection shape at toolbar, make rectangular shape at the picture.
  4. Select Copy < Open < Paste
  5. Select Text to insert sentence. You may change the picture by clicking the colour box. You also can rotate the picture by clicking Rotate.
  6. Save the picture in JPEG format.
